Dog Training & Boarding

When you know better, you do better

Picture a world where your dog can accompany you anywhere. When you speak, your dog listens every time. You take back control and have the pet you always wanted.
— Eric Galayda

Located in Chester, Seeley Creek Canine is setting new healthy expectations for dog owners everywhere.

Seeley Creek Canine sits on 40 acres comprised of pasture and wooded trails. We have a down home country feel and are tailored towards clients who desire something more than just a kennel for their loved ones. Our indoor training facility allows for climate controlled activity when weather conditions are not optimal. We also have a secure fenced-in outside training area that allows us to work off-leash control while in a safe, contained environment. We maintain a hiking trail system that is available for use by our clients and feature hiking excursions for pets staying for boarding or training.

Boarding remains a small segment of our services and is mainly prioritized for training clients. We do offer boarding to the public but do limit our numbers to ensure each pet receives personal attention. Pets are kenneled or crated during evening hours for their security but during daytime hours they are out and about frequently with us. This allows for a stress reducing environment that replicates a home and maintains their level of activity, health and socialization.

Eric Galayda - 2018

Eric Galayda - 2018

Owner/Operator/Training Director, Eric Galayda, has worked with dogs over his entire lifetime. As a youth he participated in AKC/UKC showing Shetland Sheep Dogs. Early on he was able to connect with dogs and leveraged his Junior Handler skills to shape new behaviors. He saw how when proper motivation was placed, a willing training partner followed. Eric continued to expand his dog training skills and refine behaviors for specific expectations in the working dog world. As an avid hunter he looked to include his love of dogs with his passion for being outdoors. This led Eric to training labs for duck hunt retrieves.

As time passed, Eric leveraged his skills through dog rescue. He would locate adoptable animals at inner city kill shelters that needed rehabilitation. He would carefully temperament test each potential dog for behavioral issues, evaluate the training needs and reshape them into loving adoptable pets.

Eric would use his skills at local animal rescues teaching volunteers how to manage animal behavior along with safety techniques to prevent injuries. He would often visit schools to help educate children on dog safety and how to interact with animals if encountered. In 2004, Eric took his skills public and began training others. He worked with adopted rescue dogs that were struggling with behavioral issues in their placed homes.

Eric is never satisfied and always looks to expand his knowledge. This led him into the protection work teaching dogs for military, law enforcement and personal protection. He spent 5 years working closely with some of the best trainers in the industry, teaching not only his dogs but others in the protection sports. Eric along with his primary dog, Dapper, achieved the highest level in the most challenging and elite French Ring discipline. He continues to train and compete all over the world.

Training philosophy/style

We here are Seeley Creek Canine have worked with animals from all ends of the spectrum. There is no one style of training that will fit all animals. First and foremost we need to show the behavior we expect to repeat. You can correct an animal to achieve the behavior but that is done out of compliance and not a desire or want. This does not instill repeatable results because once the correction method is not in place the requested behavior can be ignored. This holds true for only reward based training. Luring, bribing or treating the behavior with an expectation that the dog will repeat this without the reward fails frequently. You may get a few repeated behaviors to occur but once there is no reward the requests go ignored. We strive to balance expectations with all animals using techniques that will establish a solid relationship with the handler first, and then set realistic expectations through repetition that will allow for failure and success. We use a marker-based system that allows the handler to communicate with the dog. A fearful dog needs support and leadership to move the dog through this stage and look to its handler as a source of strength. An aggressive dog needs a leader that sets boundaries, holds accountability and provides consistency in their expectations. There is no one method that works and therefore the big box training stores or single method trainers cannot get achievable results. If you limit the tools you have to work with, you limit the dog’s ability to reach its maximum potential. When you know better, you do better!

INITIAL CONSULTATION

IMG_6235.jpg

This consultation is critical for us to understand your needs and goals. We will gain as much information about your dog as possible to assess both long and short-term goals. We will partner with you to develop a program that fits your needs and financial situation. At this time we will also provide immediate, practical, and easy to follow training advice so we can begin to transform the pet you have, to the dog you always wanted. It is important for you to feel comfortable with us and the training we will provide. Our clients become friends and part of our extended dog family.

BOARD & TRAIN

IMG_6967.jpg

These programs allow us to provide the best results easier, faster and with more consistency. We understand that it is scary to leave your best friend and loved one with a stranger. We provide daily updates with pictures and videos of his/her progress. We can work exclusively with your pet multiple times a day to provide control and exposure that allows us to reach the desired outcome in less time. We can place your dog in real world situations that you’ll face and achieve success each and every time. This also gives us the opportunity to provide your dog structured freedom and play. Safe socialization and down time is important to learning. Like recess it allows dogs to blow off steam and be dogs. Board and Train programs come with 3 follow up in- home sessions to transfer knowledge and proof the training at home. All board and train participants receive preferred boarding reservations, a Kuranda dog bed, premium leather leash and walking collar.

Two-week Boot Camp – This intensive behavioral modification works on specific problem areas. We focus on correcting the issues at hand that are creating the primary struggle in the owner’s environment. Leash pulling, come when called, counter surfing, lunging or jumping on strangers are all examples of this course curriculum. We incorporate general training for the common sit, down, stay and come during this time.

Three-week Board and Train – This program incorporates our behavioral modification program but will focus more on day to day compliance expectations. Waiting at the door, loose leash heeling, and distraction training within the environment. The additional time allows for us to proof the training and provide the owners a higher degree of confidence in public or home settings.

Four-week Optimal Dog or Complete Rehabilitation – This is our premier doggy transformation program. We work to provide you the dog you always wanted and expected. Off leash training will include socialization, desensitization to distractions, along with in-home behavior expectations. Sit, down, stay, come when called, emergency down, leave it, along with a few fun pet tricks will all be part of the program.

TRAINING Classes

These classes allow the owner and pet to learn together in a controlled one-on-one environment at our facility. We have multiple levels from introductory to advanced handling skills.

Six week One-hour classes

  • Introduction to Dog Training – the owner and pet will begin to shape behavior and set expectations for the pet. This will be a reward-based training that builds the relationship for future training. We work on the owner’s communication with the dog and ensuring there is consistency each time a behavior is requested. We build a foundation for sit, stay, come and how to play with your dog in an effective, safe manner. Yes, play is a form of training that can achieve faster results than just formal training. This is an on-leash program giving you the ability to walk your dog without pulling.

  • Intermediate Behavior Shaping – this class if for those whose dogs have advanced past the introductory class. When the relationship has been built and we are struggling with consistently getting the outcome of an asked behavior, this class is for you. We work to hold accountability in the dog and building a higher work ethic. We show the expected behavior and add complexities to the training. Sit/stay in the kitchen is good but does it fail when Aunt Sue shows up? Does walking nicely on a leash alone without distraction fail as soon as another dog or squirrel is around? These are the more advanced expectations of control we show the dogs and expect compliance. This class includes e-collar training for off-leash control.

  • Advanced Competition Obedience – this class is for owners who have reached a high degree of competency and control. We will now introduce off leash, high distraction training expected with service animals. The goal is to provide owners with the tools and training techniques that will allow them to take their pet anywhere and everywhere under complete control on or off leash.

In-Home Training

This mirrors our facility-based training program but is brought to your home for those with busy schedules that need the flexibility of an in-home approach. We partner with you in the days and times that work best to fit the family’s needs. We include everyone that will be interacting with the pets to set expectations and build consistency in handling from family member to family member. Due to travel time and locations, please contact us for a quote.

Group Classes

Group classes are Saturday mornings located at Riverwalk in Rock Hill SC for clients who have met minimum control expectations. These will be scheduled based on availability and attendance. Please understand this is a privileged group looking to further their relationship and control with their pets. Participants have exemplified a high degree of control to ensure safety of others as there will be significant off leash activity.

Seeley Creek Canine sees our boarding as the highest compliment from our clients. They are trusting us to safeguard their pet while owners need to be away. We always prefer your pet join you in travel but understand this isn’t always possible. This is where we ensure the pet’s environment is controlled to reduce stress and allow for their time here to mimic home life. Pets are kenneled or crated in the evening but allowed maximum access to be free outdoors when possible. We offer varying levels of additional activity for boarders to ensure they remain active, engaged and happy while they visit their own vacation center.

Roxy

Alissa & Roxy

Thank you for watching Roxy for us! I heard she did well. Jon also said she was pretty tired when he picked her up. Great news that I was worried for nothing… Jon said to refer your company which we will. I’m so happy I asked about boarding because I only knew that you fostered dogs.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Does my dog stay in a kennel the whole time he/she is boarding?

  • No, we feel that this creates behavioral issues, depression and can lead to eliminations in the home upon return. Pets here are kenneled at night but are out and allowed to socialize throughout the day with staff.

Do you train small dogs?

  • Yes, we are an all-inclusive training facility. While most of our training is focused around problem behavior and control this is not segmented to just the larger breeds.

Do you work with aggressive dogs?

  • Yes, our foundation in protection dogs and the sport world makes us an ideal choice for problematic pets. We work to reshape animal or human aggression.

Are you open to the public?

  • We are a small facility that works one-on-one with our clients until they feel they have the control needed to attend our group class. For this reason and the privacy of our clients we do ask you call for an appointment.

If we’re having problems in the home or neighborhood do you come out to us?

  • We do provide remote services and conduct in-home training. Due to travel requirements and locations in-home training does require a travel fee.

If I’m having only one issue, can we work on that alone without a whole training package?

  • Typically one behavioral issue spills over or is triggered by other environmental factors. We will tailor a training package for your needs but find that shaping control in multiple areas provides a balance in other life skills for your pup.

Will you use adverse tools or punishment to train my dog?

  • We evaluate each dog based on the training expectations and desired outcome. We ensure there is a balanced approach to learning and know that you cannot correct a dog to complete a behavior it does not know or understand. This is unfair and does not produce repeatable results. There are positive markers that make learning fun along with negative markers that let the dog know a mistake was made. If a correction is too severe, the attempt to repeat the desired behavior will not occur. If a dangerous behavior is not corrected, it will be repeated without consequence. We are never unfair and ensure the well-being of every animal in our care.

What vaccinations are needed for training and/or boarding?

  • We believe that over-vaccinations in dogs is an epidemic leading to a large majority of health problems. We do require rabies as followed by law and at a minimum the first round of puppy vaccines and the boosters provided at year one. We allow our clients the option to vaccinate for kennel cough or canine influenza. In order for these to be effective, however, they need to be administered 10 days prior to boarding. If your dog is very young or elderly, we especially believe you should research your options. We are here to discuss any concerns you may have!
